Art and the Self Since the 90's
Working with the curators of this exhibition, this group project will explore themes of the exhibition with the aim of devising ways to engage audiences with the work on display. As a group, you will work with the curators to undertake some foundational primary and secondary research which can add to the overall interpretation of the exhibition.

How Elliott and Gracie Worked Together
From the beginning Elliott and I worked out what we both felt the most comfortable doing. As a Graphic Designer, Elliott took the job of creating the Snapchat filters, we wanted to make sure that all the filters looked like they were from the same collection. I took the role of creating the Snapchat instruction booklet that The Arts Council
collection asked for, a document that basically show step by step how to use snapchat. I think that splitting the work up between us was helpful, we kept in communications about what we were doing but mostly trusted the other person just to get on with what they were assigned to do.
Strengths
Decided on jobs that we both felt comfortable doing
Used each other’s skills for the best outcome
We had good communication skills

Market Research

“The smart phone camera has become the primary way content is shared on social media. Mobile live streaming, Stories-like features and camera effects have become part of the standard repertoire of features of social media networks”.
– Mark Flowers, Research Analyst – Consumer Technology
Instagram and Snapchat see the most growth
Instagram and Snapchat have seen the highest levels of growth among internet users in the UK, Snapchat usage growing from 13% to 16%.

Social media users share photos and images more than anything else, with 58% of social media users ranking photos/ images among the top three types of content they post. Instagram and Snapchat have made smartphone cameras one of, if not the, primary way content is shared.

Whilst in the initial stage of putting designs together, market research was undertaken to evaluate the appropriateness of snapchat as a platform for the galleries use and to determine how other galleries use it and to what success.
To judge the value of snapchat Mintel Marketing Reports were used, the report showed that snapchat is the second biggest growing platform this year, only just behind Instagram and having the second largest visiting frequency. It also highlighted the content being viewed and shared, pictures are the biggest use of social media today, especially with story features becoming one of the primary ways content is viewed and shared.
Case Studies
We also looked at gallery’s who are already using snapchat geo filters, LA County Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Art Boston have been early adopters and have the strongest profiles.

They use the platform in different ways, LA uses snapchat filters to display their logo and then caption a funny slogan in relation to the piece of art they are showing. This creates an amusing meme effect while maintaining a strong link through the logo.
Boston use it as a much more conventional advertising method, having a strong logo and then a bright title showing the information its a great way of advertising brand and event.
This research provides certain evidence that snapchat filters are a viable tool for not only visitor engagement among social media user but as a marketing tool for the gallery itself.
